Britain sends metal detectors and bomb deactivation kits to Ukraine
Britain said on Friday it had given Ukraine more than 1,000 metal detectors and 100 bomb-disabling kits to help clear minefields in the latest case of military support.
“Russia’s use of landmines and targeting of civilian infrastructure underscores the shocking cruelty of Putin’s invasion,” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement.
“This latest package of British support will help Ukraine safely clear land and buildings as it reclaims its rightful territory.”

President Maia Sandu, elected in 2020 on a pro-European and anti-corruption platform, expressed hope on Thursday that a crisis-ridden Moldova will join the European Union before 2030.
“My wishes are very ambitious,” Sandu said in remarks broadcast on state broadcaster Moldova-1. “I think we have to become a member of the European Union by the end of this decade.”
The EU accepted Moldova as a candidate for membership in June, when it granted the same status to neighboring Ukraine. It was a diplomatic triumph for Sandu, whose country is one of the poorest in Europe and faces many economic struggles.

Moldova is struggling to wean itself off Russian gas as it faces power cuts partly caused by Moscow’s attacks on neighboring Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure. He is also facing protests over soaring inflation.
In a sign of progress on Wednesday, the Moldovan utility company Energocom announced an agreement with the Romanian company Nuclearelectrica to supply enough electricity to meet 80% of the deficits expected in January 2023.
Romanian electricity producers were allowed to sell electricity to Moldova at 450 lei per megawatt hour, under a special ceiling due to the war in Ukraine.
